An SUV, ideal for a road trip through the American West

If you want to get off the beaten track and explore unpaved trails, an SUV (or even a 4×4, depending on the case) is essential. Be aware that no rental company will cover your trip off paved roads, so you compromise at your own risk.

The sportier vehicles are best suited for couples or solo travelers who prefer paved roads (don’t expect to be able to drive on the Monument Valley track in a Mustang!).

Don’t forget that the trunk capacity of this type of car is limited, and it’s difficult, if not painful, to drive with the wind in your hair in the Mojave Desert or the heart of Arizona and Utah when the temperature is above 40°C! The Mustang is best suited for a short drive along the Pacific coast, for example.

All vehicles are identified by a series of 4 letters, corresponding to the classification of ACRISS (Association of Systems and Standards of the Car Rental Industry), the international vehicle classification system used by all rental companies. If you want to familiarize yourself with this code and decipher it, please refer to the ACRISS website and this PDF document (in French).
